Ten years in development it produces zero carbon emissions, yet performs like a petrol-fuelled machine. Rhino- This new arrival at Budapest Zoo was cause for international celebration. For one thing, the female rhino is a welcome addition to the critically endangered White Rhino population. But particularly exciting for animal conservationists is the fact that she's the first ever rhino birth resulting from artificial insemination. Bio-diesel Truck- It was the very last leg of a 'wicked' trip. Two young Americans set off from Deadhorse in northern Alaska and drove their vegetable oil-fuelled truck to the literal end of the road--where Argentina's highway 3 stops at the tip of South America. The trip was complete after nine months and hundreds of stops on two continents to ask for people's used cooking oil. Reclaiming The Desert- For China, home to part of the Gobi Desert, its increasing spread has become a serious problem. Annual storms dump sand on major cities and encroaching desert has displaced herders and farmers, eating up valuable arable land. The UN Warns that a deteriorating environment could drive about 50 million Chinese from their homes by 2010. Office Art- In London, ten student sculptors from the royal college of art presented an exhibition of works, all made from recycled office waste. Using photocopiers, stationery, filing folders and even thousands of staples, the students showed that art can be made from discarded materials that would normally go to landfill. Saving Turtles- They may look like sacks of potatoes but these bags contain precious cargo. Indian authorities rescued hundreds of endangered turtles being smuggled to eastern West Bengal state. Police arrested six others and spared over 1600 turtles the death sentence. Glacier- The city of El Alto, on the outskirts of La Paz in Bolivia. At over 4,000 metres altitude it's one of the highest cities in the world, but the nearby glacier is dwindling, and with it El Alto's water supply. Eco-friendly Housing- Francis Court is a block of 15 apartments in Britain's West Midlands. At first glance it looks quite normal until you notice some of its rather unusual design features. It's an innovative eco-friendly housing project and represents an important element of the British government's push for a 60% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by the year 2050. | ||
