520 |a The British gave Ireland self government in 1921 but kept control of six northern counties. They were different because they had a Protestant majority. One in three of the people in the new province were Catholics. Nearly fifty tense years later British troops were sent to the streets to keep the peace. Catholics had protested against discrimination. Protestant mobs and even police had replied by invading Catholic streets and burning their houses. The Troubles ignited.
