Summary: | Waingels College in Reading wanted to get away from a one-size fits all curriculum and to develop a fluid, open and personalised approach to learning. So says Executive Principal Richard Green. The school has been working on this for several years. Year 7s use the RSA's Opening Minds curriculum; staff use a competences-based approach in other years; there are vertical learning groups in some areas; the school works to ensure that teachers are not isolated, bringing them together regularly to reflect on the impact of their innovations. From a Year 7 lesson dedicated to listening skills, to a Year 9 science lesson that aims to develop effective thinking skills, we see what the approach looks like in action. |
